EARLY HISTORY OF WOODSTOCK

There was a tribe of them which remained in the vicinity for years, dividing their time between Hillsdale and Lenawee counties. They were of the Pottawattomie tribe. Their chief was Bawbese, one of the finest specimens of the red man it has ever been my fortune to look upon. And, unlike the average Indian, his tall form was well rounded out, and with his erect and manly bearing, he appeared in every way worthy of the position which he filled; but, like all his tribe, he could not forbear, when an opportunity offered, to indulge in the white man's curse—intoxication.
