My father's Whig proclivities no doubt served to strengthen that friendship. The brother of President Fillmore used to teach school in old Wales, Erie county, N. Y., and I can well remember of Millard visiting his brother's school, and mending my goose quill pen many a time, I all unconscious of the exalted position he was to occupy in the coming drama of life.
