Ministers, I think, do not feel obliged to receive the bag of potatoes, or the ten pounds of pork, or the half barrel of soft soap—as I knew one minister to do—on subscriptions at the present day. Six hundred dollars a year was the maximum of his salary received during his ministry with the Ypsilanti church, covering a period of more than seventeen years.
