it is with the design to perpetuate the memory of the worthy pioneers in the Christian ministry of Washtenaw county, that this paper is prepared;
and in preparing it, I have confined myself mainly within the circle of my early acquaintance with them. It is eminently proper, however, to give a brief outline of the labors of those who first penetrated the new settlements of the county, and brought with them Christian truth. With the first ministers I had no personal acquaintance. I became a resident of the county in 1828, about four years after the first settlement. The introduction of the gospel was contemporaneous with the first settlers. In Dr. Pilcher's " History of Protestantism in Michigan " I find the following record:
