Detroit, July 13th, 1812. Dear Gen'l.: I need not descant upon the pecuniary circumstances of most of the men composing my detachment. 'Tis enough to say that a great share of them have families without any visible means of support except the earnings of the husband. They were promised by the officers under whom they volunteered, that they should be paid at the end of two months.
