The Pontiac Manuscript

Friday, June 3, the Indians were quiet all day, except the guard around the fort according to their custom. At 10 a. m. the judge received orders from the commander to assemble all the Frenchmen who were in the fort and read to them the letter which had been received the day before by the escaped prisoner. This letter had been translated into French by a merchant who spoke good French. It contained the news that peace had been concluded between England and France and that by stipulation between the two crowns Canada remained in the hands of the English, with the whole of the Illinois.
