There were, however, some who had their lives saved by being* adopted to serve as slaves in the camps of the Indians, and to be spectators to the terrible death of their countrymen. The Hurons, who had delivered their prisoners to the Ottawas, rejoined the guards of the barges, which they took to their village, together with the sergeant who had conducted the barges, whom they had retained for themselves to do with him as the Ottawas had done with the others. They waited until dusk to take the barges to Pontiac, the great chief, to let him and his whole band participate in the prize.
