who, indeed, had passed the day before on the other side of the river in canoes, with a red flag in the rear of one of their canoes. This had been seen by several, who, while they did not know what it meant, had guessed that the Indians had made some other capture, which was verified by the report of this man, who said that he had seen the commander of the captured place; that the garrison had been killed and the fort burned, after the houses, both of the merchants and soldiers, had been pillaged. The commander of the fort refused to believe this until he should see a letter of this officer, who then was a prisoner amongst the Ottawas, where the Hurons had brought him.
