The Pontiac Manuscript
After some minutes' conversation they demanded bread, which was given them, as: much as they could carry. While the Indians were in the fort the rumor spread that Colonel Bouquet was about to arrive with 2000 troops. Upon this false report, the Indians, without other conclusion, demanded to go out to fetch this news to their chiefs. The gate was opened to them and they returned alone to their camp and narrated this news to Pontiac,
who, without astonishment, simply said that the English had lied and set the rumor afloat to make them afraid. He made Messrs. Godfroy and Ohapoton retire from the camp for some time and said he would call them when he had spoken to his men about what they had just told him.
