When the commander saw that the fire of the savages had ceased almost entirely, he ordered Mr. LaButte to go out and speak to them. Mr. Ohap-oton, a resident of the fort, joined Mr. LaButte to go together to the Indian camp. Several residents made use of this opportunity, with the "approval of the commander, to retire to the shore settlements, so as not to witness the expected death of the officers. Messrs. LaButte and Chapoton went on their way and took with them Mr. Jacques Godfroy, who made no objection to go with them, because it might be for the public good, and hoping that three persons known and liked by the Indians would pacify them easier.
