The Pontiac Manuscript
The commanders, upon this report, whose truth was apparent, ordered, without revealing what they knew, at once, that during the day the guards should be doubled; that two sentinels should be posted at each main gate; that the two small gates should be closed to everybody and anybody, which was done immediately, and enjoined upon the officers to inspect the arms of their troops and notify them to be ready for duty at the first beat of the drum. All this to be done without great stir, lest the savages entering the fort should perceive that they were discovered. These orders were well executed without the French finding out anything about it.
