charcoal (pulverized), and, the author thinks, sulphur, also, equal quantities, except the sulphur, perhaps, only one-half as much as of either of the others, under shelter, but where they can have daily access to it; and also to begin to feed early with peas, pumpkins, potatoes, etc., the potatoes and pumpkins properly cooked and thickened with pea meal, if plenty, else with shorts, or a little cornmeal when no cheaper article is at hand to be worked off; so that by November 15th, or 20th, at farthest, they may be ready for slaughter. The charcoal is of vital importance to hogs, unless the Stove coal, as mentioned in the other connection, proves to fill its place; and there is no longer of their eating too much ashes or salt. Running water ought always, if possible, to pass through their pasture; and when not possible fresh water should be pumped daily for their use, as well as for all other stock, even to the chickens.
