Our trade was princi pally with Chicago and Milwaukee, Lake Michigan lying between us and our "base of supplies. " Having to ship our products off the beach by means of scows, navigation was open to us but about five months of the year, within which, of course, supplies for man and beast must be provided for the other seven.
