had stolen the march on them and they had to go elsewhere for cargoes, or return to Chicago light, to tell their story and claim pay for the trip. Our trade was princi pally with Chicago and Milwaukee, Lake Michigan lying between us and our "base of supplies. " Having to ship our products off the beach by means of scows, navigation was open to us but about five months of the year, within which, of course, supplies for man and beast must be provided for the other seven.
