REPAIRING FORT DETROIT.

The heaviness of this tax is most severely felt, as you may judge by the delay and the difficulty the people have in paying it. This proves the badness of our circumstances. We have not mentioned anything here with a view of throwing any odium on you or any of your predeeessors in this command, but to show the impossibility of complying with the requisition now under consideration. To make our plea of exemption still stronger, we take the liberty to lay before you Mr. Navarre's letter to us with its translation, as he has long resided here in a public character and being a man of knowledge we cannot doubt but testimony will have its deserved effect with his excellency the general. We forbear any further argument of our inabilities. You know, sir, the sorrowful situation we was reduced to for the want of money and the languishing condition our trade
