Surveyor of Detroit
George Christian Anthon, son of John Michael Anthon and Dorothea Louise Cramet, was born in Saltzengen, in the Duchy of Saxe Meinengen, August 35, 1734. Died in the city of New York, December 22, 1815.
He studied medicine in Eisenach, and in 1750 stood his examination in Surgeons' Hall. In 1754 left Germany for Amsterdam. In 1757 on his voyage from thence to Savinaw was captured by a British privateer out of New York, and carried into the harbor, where the vessel was condemned.
In 1758 he was appointed assistant surgeon in the general British hospital, in Albany, under Sir James Neiper, its head, and when the hospital broke up soon after, received the warrant of assistant surgeon to the first battalion of sixtieth regiment, Royal Americans. In 1760 detached with a party that took possession of Detroit, under Major Rogers, and became the surgeon of the whole command. Continued in Detroit from 1760 to 1764.
