on the one side, there being present as witnesses the Askins, Henry Hay, the oldest son of Governor Hay, and himself a British officer, and some others of the principal British residents.
The purpose of the council was private in its nature, and under the treaties then existing, the British authorities could not have well acted as principals on such an occasion. Certain chiefs, purporting to act for their tribes, there named, granted to Jonathan Schifflin, Jacobus Visgar, Richard Pat-tinson and Robert Jones a large tract of laud,
