GEN. GAGE'S LETTER TO CAPT. MACPHERSON.

New York, April 8, 1778. Sir: —Your letters of the 14th and 18th December are very full on the subjects of Grants and Lands, at the Detroit. I am to explain to you that the King has not invested any persons whatever with the power of granting lands in America, except to his governors, within the limits of their respec- tive provinces and under certain forms and restrictions, and where any purchase is made of the Indians, within the limits of the province, they are not valid, unless permission is given so to do, and the purchase made in presence of the governor, and his majesty's superintendent of Indian affairs.
