LETTER GIVING SKETCH OF FREDERICK BATES.1

St. Louis, Feb. 10, 1859. C. I. Walker, Cor. Sec. of the Histl. Society, Detroit, Michigan. Dear Sir: —I am honored with your letter of the 3d inst., enquiring after Frederick Bates. You are right in conjecturing that he was my relative. He was my elder brother, the third of the seven sons of Thomas Fleming Bates, of Belmont, Goochland County, Virginia; and I am the last of the seven sons (and five daughters) all of whom lived to mature age. Our father was bred a merchant, but was driven from trade and pretty much broken up by the War of the Revolution. He was a Quaker until he forfeited his membership
