Willard L. Brooks was born in the town of Bristol, Hartford county, Connecticut, July 21, 1808. His minority was passed on his father's farm, with only the advantages of a common school education. Having a desire to see something of the world, he, with his brother Charles, hired out as peddlers in the employ of Wheeler & Brooks, of his native town. To what extent he engaged in the nutmeg trade, history is silent, but as he continued in the business for several years, it is a fair inference that he was satisfied,
