In 1862 Judge Wells raised the twenty-fifth regiment of infantry, Michigan volunteers,
which greatly distinguished itself under the command. of Colonel 0. H. Moore.

In June, 1874, Judge Wells was appointed presiding Judge of the court of Alabama
claims, a position he filled with great credit and usefulness until ill health compelled him
to come home and finally to resign, less two years which intervened between the
expiration of the first organization of the court and its re-organization some two years
afterward.
