About this stage of the proceedings an organization was quietly, and, I might say, secretly formed, known and designated by its members as the "Northern Rangers." It generally comprised the members of both houses living north of the Central Railroad, but with what exceptions I am not now prepared to say. The place of our meeting was generally one of the large rooms of Wales's Hotel, on the present site of the Biddle House. We had no stated periods, but met on call. We had good leaders and organ-izer prominent among the number were our speaker, George W. Peck, and Senators Fenton, Bush, and Parsons. It was the best organization of the kind I ever saw. We soon became well drilled and disciplined.
