| Lake Superior in Michigans Iron country 1800's
This location was dis
covered as far back as 1852, by the veteran explorer, Mr. S. C. Smith, and it
had been known as the Smith Mountain for twenty years before it had been
reached with railroad facilities. The Michigamme and various other mines
were opened at the same time, along the extension of the iron range west-
ward. Active explorations for iron ore on the Menominee range com-
menced about this time, and many promising deposits were discovered,
which began to be developed in 1877, after the completion of a branch of
the C. & N. W. E. E. gave them an outlet at Escanaba. The Menominee
range has proved to be of very great productive capacity, and has been
developed with great rapidity.
