| Lake Superior in Michigans Iron country 1800's
Many other persons, all of whose names I cannot recall, were personally
instrumental in promoting the building of the canal, among these should be
mentioned: Judge Wm. A. Burt, the father of Mr. John Burt; Captain
Canfield, of the United States Topographical Corps; Mr. J. W. Brooks, D.
M. L. Hewitt, and the late Heman B. Ely. The canal proved equal to all
expectations in its workings for several years, but later on the vast increase
of commerce made it necessary to use larger lake craft, drawing a greater
depth of water than this canal would accommodate, and the State of Mich
igan was induced to spend some part of the earnings of the canal on its
enlargement,
