Lake Superior in Michigans Iron country 1800's

At one o'clock of that day we commenced clearing the site of the present city of Marquette. We began by chopping off the trees and brush at the point of the rocks just south of the Cleveland ore docks. We cut the trees close to the ground and threw them bodily over the bank on to the lake shore; then, under the direction of Captain Moodv, we began the construction of a dock, which we thought would stand like the pyramids. We did this by carrying these whole trees into the water and piling them in tiers crosswise, until the pile was even with the surface of the water.
