Thus it happened that the first attempt to utilize
these deposits were by making blooms from the ore in forges with charcoal.
The first of these forges was built by the Jackson Iron Company on the Carp
river, three miles east of Negaunee, in 1847'. This company was organized
at Jackson, Michigan, in June, 1845, for the purpose of exploring the min-
eral regions on the south shore of Lake Superior, and dispatched an expedi-
tion to Lake Superior, under the charge of Mr. P. M. Everett, during the
