Father Winter
So they continued their journey over the 24
muddy, unfrozen ground, and the snow still fast falling. They got through the day very well, except severely suffering from cold. The first night they stayed at the house of Judge Pendergrass. Mrs. P. was much surprised at their approach, having never seen a woman in their wilderness on horseback, the travel being almost wholly by the lake. Mrs. Winter went early to bed and had a good night's rest, which she truly needed, in view of the yet unknown hardships before her.
