In the evening of the day on which she wrote the above she was surprised by the appearance of a Mr. Evans, who lived a few miles from Beech Woods. He had been in the army at Fort Erie, and was on his way home. He proposed that they go on with him and remain at his home till the fate of Mr. Winter, for good or ill, should be known. She decided to accept this offer, and in the morning was ready to start.
