Father Winter
On the way, Mrs. Winter fell in with a Mr. Murray, from New Haven, who, with his family, was on his way to settle in the Mohawk valley, and they traveled together till they reached that river. It was not till the third day they reached Whitehall, Mr. Winter arriving about the same time, a distance of only thirty-five or forty miles. It is probable that Mrs. Winter stopped a day at Orwell, where they had previously resided.
They found one tavern at Whitehall, and it was thronged with people who had come in from the surrounding country to attend a show of wax figures, at that time as great an attraction as Barnum's circus is now.
