He then tore down a church and some other buildings that stood outside the fort, so that the Indians could neither find shelter there nor set fire to the buildings, and burn the fort itself. The Indian allies of the French, the Pottawattomies, the Ottawas, etc., had not yet returned from their winter hunting grounds. The French were in consternation, and the commander, as he quaintly says, "did not know on what saint to call. " He says he put on the best countenance he could and encouraged his people.
