In a new country like that, new maxims are sometimes necessary, which may appear censurable on their face, and be intrinsically good. " He cordially endorses De la Motte's conduct in some particulars in which it is attacked in the report, and mildly censures him in the following language: " Nevertheless, I find a too great cupidity in said Sieur de la Motte, and that his private interests in establishing that post may have engaged him to prefer his special advantages to the general good of the colony.
