Early Detroit

On the 6th of July, 1709, Count Pont-chartrain, the steady friend of De la Motte, acknowledges to M. d' Aigremont the reception of his letter. He rebukes him in the following language: " I have noted all you write me respecting Detroit. As it was the main object of your mission, it seems to me that your sojourn there was not long enough to obtain a thorough understanding of it. Besides, M. De la Motte complains that you did not confer a sufficient length of time with him to appreciate the reasons whereon he acted, which, perhaps, might have led you to adopt other sentiments than those you embraced.
