M. d' Aigremont reported strongly against the further maintenance of this post as highly prejudicial to Canada, mainly for the reason that it would be fatal to Mackinaw, and would throw the Indian trade into the hands of the English. He gives a very unfavorable description of the soil, as consisting of a sandy surface nine or ten inches deep, beneath which is a clay so stiff that water cannot penetrate it, and the trees as being stunted oaks and hardy walnuts.
