He established some curious regulations of the latter trade in order to prevent the disturbances that would have arisen from the excessive use of brandy. It was all kept in the public storehouse and was dealt out to each customer, whether French or Indian, in his turn. Only one twenty-fourth part of a quart could be obtained at a time, and for that a price was paid of twenty francs a quart. The high price and the small quantity operated as magic regulators and measurably prevented intoxication.
