It was over this motley group of soldiers, settlers, traders, voyageurs, bush rangers and Indians that De la Motte exercised absolute authority, subject only to the command of the Governor General and the authority of the King, both of whom were too far distant to operate as a serious check upon the commandant. The Company of the Colony no longer monopolized the fur trade, and with their monopoly ceased the salary of 2, 000 francs which they had paid to De la Motte, and the supplies they had furnished him. He became dependent upon such resources as the place itself could furnish
