Early Detroit
Rich and
costly furs were often presented to officials, while the return presents came from the King. Thus the whole influence of the colonial government was added to the united influence of the Jesuits against the very existence of Detroit. Strong representations against its continuance were early made to the King with such effect that in May, 1703, he ordered that the principal men of the country be assembled, to consider and pass upon the expediency of its future existence. The order is of much interest, and is as follows:
