DATE OF THE DETROIT SETTLEMENT.
About 1685 the English determined to push their settlements along the lakes and as far as Mackinaw and Lake Superior, which would have enabled them, by communicating with Hudson's Bay, to form a complete barrier against the extension of French colonization and would have secured to them the monopoly of the rich fur trade of the Northwest. As the Canadians controlled the passage by the Ottawas river, and nothing could be done without water communication, it was obvious that the nation which secured the passage of the Detroit river would maintain supremacy in the upper country.
