as to show that they were not obtained from any loose reports. There is nothing in the accounts of the missionaries, so far as the Relations show, which could have furnished this intelligence. It must probably have been obtained from the roving Frenchmen who traversed this region. That the country was by no means an unknown land is very evident from the history of La Salle's expedition. The year before he started from Niagara river with his company, he sent forward a number of Frenchmen to winter at Detroit and await his arrival the next season.
