and in an official document in 1691 the importance "of preserving the posts we occupy at Fort St. Louis, at Detroit and Mackinaw, " is spoken of; and in 1700 M. De Longueil, who is mentioned as commandant at Detroit, held an Indian council at his post of Detroit. Whether this was at the same post seems difficult to determine, but it is very evident that ¦whatever post was then existing was temporary in its character.
