many of these adventurers joined the Indian tribes and settled among them. It would be singular if such were not the case here. The combination of advantages possessed by this point, as easy of access by water and affording an abundance of fish as well as of land animals, rendered it always a favorite camping ground of the Indians. An Indian town was found here by the first explorers, if we may credit the authorities. That there were either Frenchmen or friends of the French among them will appear from further statements to be referred to.
