Frequently solicited by promotion to other fields, his affection for his old first love prompted him to remain with us, and with the exception of the short time in which as a prisoner, being captured with our small-pox hospital, which we all well remember, he was with us. On the retirement of Surgeon Motram, Mason was made full surgeon, and as such remained on constant duty until mustered out with the regiment at the close of the war, August 20, 1865.
