Ellzey Hayden died at Charlotte, Mich., on the seventh day of February, 1885. He was born in Orange, Ashland county, Ohio, on the twentieth day of August, 1825, and lived there on a farm until sixteen years of age. His parents were Miles and Sarah Hayden. He was educated in the district schools and at Ashland Academy. He learned the tinners' trade and afterwards was engaged as a clerk in the dry goods store of S. E. Millett, and removed with the latter to Charlotte, Mich., in the autumn of 1844. After remaining in the employ of Mr. Millett a few months, he taught one term of school in the Charlotte district. He then entered into partnership with his brother John, in the hardware trade, and so continued for six years, when he purchased the latter's interest and carried on the business alone until 1860. He was then obliged to retire on account of impaired health.
