Conspiracy of Pontiac
The Seige of Detriot
MR. JACQUES PARENT'S ACCOUNT.
Mr. Parent is eighty-three years old. He was on the opposite side of the river at the commencement of siege, and in the fort, where he remained two months, when he obtained permission of the commandant to cross the river for the purpose of assisting his father to harvest his grain.
On the 9th of May, 1763, Pontiac crossed from his encampment and murdered an English family in the rear of the fort and another on Hog Island. This was the commencement of the war. The Indians besieged the fort a few days and then Pontiac sent to demand of Major Gladwin, who had a short time previous relieved Major Campbell of the command, to send some of his officers to the house of Mr. Quyeries, to hold a council. Major Campbell stated that it was perhaps proper that he should go, and, accompanied by Mr. MacDougall, he left the fort and proceeded to the house appointed, where they were made prisoners and were committed to the care of the French people. They were sometimes at the house of Mr. Queries, sometimes at that of Mr. Jacques Campau, and at others at Mr. Meloche's at Parent's Creek.
