After the capture of the last party of barges, the encampment was removed to the little run below Van Every's, about two miles above Parent's Creek. But the Indians still loitered about Meloche's house, and the provisions continued to be issued there. Sometime in the month of August, MacDougall proposed to Major Campbell to attempt their escape. The Major hesitated, on account of his age* and imperfect vision, fearing that he might be met and overtaken, but at the same time advised MacDougall to try and get away. He did so and reached the fort in safety.
