afforded a good deal of satisfaction to Boothe and Lucas, who were both Democrats—in fact, every one concerned in the melon patch were Democrats, except Hyde, who finally went over.
Lucas was a great sportsman, and in his day, very few men who came in contact with him, got the better of him with the target rifle or cards. On one occasion a man came to Bellevue to shoot with Lucas for money;
