The following year in March, other towns fell, and the brave and noble Brebeuf and the gentle and loving Gabriel Lallemont met death by tortures that only demons could invent or demons inflict. The whole annals-of martyrdom scarcely afford a parallel, either of the ingenious cruelty of the tormentors or of the wonderful fortitude and Christian heroism of the
