From France we received our first laws, our original social polity, our early religious charac-acter; and although the wave of Anglo-Saxon emigration has, within a third
of a century, rolled in upon us a population of half a million, it has not obliterated, and it is to be hoped it never will obliterate, the clear and distinct influence upon our social character of the era of the French Dominion.
